Works on Metro Line 2: Traffic Regulations and Changes to Operating Hours
Significant changes are coming to Metro Line 2 from May 5 to May 21. Due to technical works for the installation of a 5G network and rail replacement, the Attiki, Stathmos Larissis (Larissa Station), and Metaxourgeio stations will close at 21:40, directly affecting the evening commutes of the traveling public.
Modifications to Operating Hours
According to the schedule released by the relevant authorities, from Tuesday, May 5, until Thursday, May 21, temporary regulations will be imposed on central stations of the network. Specifically, from Sunday to Thursday, the "Attiki," "Stathmos Larissis" (Larissa Station), and "Metaxourgeio" stations will terminate operations at 21:40, which is two and a half hours earlier than the usual schedule. It should be clarified that the "Attiki" station will not close completely, as it will remain open exclusively to serve passengers of Line 1 (ISAP - Athens-Piraeus Electric Railway, the city's oldest metro line). During the hours of construction, train services will operate normally on the remaining sections of the line, namely the "Anthoupoli – Sepolia" section and the "Omonia – Elliniko" section.
Last Train Departures
To avoid inconvenience, citizens are urged to take note of the last departure times from the affected stations. Specifically, for the direction toward Elliniko, the last service will depart from Sepolia at 21:30, from Attiki at 21:32, from Stathmos Larissis at 21:33, and from Metaxourgeio at 21:34. In the opposite direction, toward Anthoupoli, the last train will depart from Syntagma at 21:31, from Omonia at 21:34, from Metaxourgeio at 21:36, from Stathmos Larissis at 21:37, and from Attiki at 21:39.
Alternative Service via Bus Line X19
To fill the transportation gap in the section that will be out of operation, OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organization) is launching a temporary bus line designated as X19 "Omonia Metro St. – Ag. Antonios Metro St." This line will operate daily starting from 21:40 and will remain active until the end of the fixed-track transport operating hours. Services will follow specific stops: Toward Agios Antonios, buses will stop at Omonia (Start), Metaxourgeio, Stathmos Larissis, Kadmou Street, and Agios Antonios. On the return trip to Omonia, stops include Agios Antonios, Kadmou Street, Stathmos Larissis (on Deligiorgi Street), Peroke, and Omonia.
Purpose of the Works
The implementation of these scheduled interventions is expected to significantly upgrade the technological and operational capacity of the network. The replacement of old rails is directly linked to the safety and quality of transport, while the installation of the 5G network is a critical step toward the overall digital modernization of the capital's public transport system, improving the daily passenger experience.
