Traffic Regulations on Thessaloniki Inner Ring Road Due to Flyover Construction Works
The Thessaloniki Inner Ring Road will be partially closed during nighttime hours due to construction works carried out by the contractor consortiums for the Flyover project (an elevated expressway development). Traffic regulations enforced by the Τροχαία (Thessaloniki Traffic Police) will be in effect from June 20 to June 23, 2026, directly affecting vehicle movement and requiring drivers to follow alternative routes.
Eastbound Traffic Regulations
According to an official announcement from the Thessaloniki Traffic Police Department, a traffic blockade will be implemented on the Eastbound section of the Inner Ring Road on the night of Saturday, June 20, 2026. The measure will be in effect from 23:00 until 05:00 on Sunday morning, targeting traffic heading toward Chalkidiki and the Airport.
The closure is concentrated on the section between Interchange K5 (Papageorgiou Hospital) and Interchange K6 (Meteora). Specifically, the total traffic suspension begins at the exit branch toward Efkarpia (Municipal Stadium). Additionally, vehicle entry to the Eastbound Inner Ring Road will not be possible from the hospital-level ramp. During this period, Westbound traffic will operate normally without interruptions.
To accommodate drivers moving from the Westbound Inner Ring Road toward the East, a mandatory diversion has been planned. Vehicles will exit at the Sklavenitis junction (Efkarpia) and, following informational signage through Giani Ritsou and Thiseos streets, will head toward the city center, with indicative routes via Leoforos Stratou (Stratou Avenue).
Westbound Traffic Regulations
Construction for the Flyover elevated highway will continue in the following days, necessitating further traffic interventions. From Sunday, June 21, 2026, through Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the axis will close daily during the same night hours (23:00 to 05:00 the following morning), but in the opposite direction.
Specifically, the blockade will be applied to the Westbound section of the East Inner Ring Road between Interchange K6 (Meteora) and Interchange K5 (Efkarpia). The traffic stoppage will occur at the height of the K6 (Meteora) junction. Drivers will be mandatorily diverted via the exit of this junction, with traffic subsequently proceeding through Andreas Papandreou Avenue and the broader urban road network. During these three days, Eastbound traffic will remain unaffected.
Recommendations for Drivers
The construction companies executing the project, in direct cooperation with the Traffic Police, strongly urge drivers to exercise extreme caution during nighttime travel. Strict compliance with temporary informational signage and instructions from the Traffic Police is deemed absolutely necessary to prevent traffic accidents and minimize congestion within the city.
