Thessaloniki Metro Set to Resume Operations: Kalamaria Extension and Future Projects
The Thessaloniki Metro (Μετρό Θεσσαλονίκης) is returning to normal operation on June 20, 2026, following a temporary suspension by Elliniko Metro (Ελληνικό Μετρό - Hellenic Metro) for testing. This development is of critical importance now, as it prepares the ground for the upcoming operation of the new extension to Kalamaria at the end of July, following the analysis regarding the interest rate reduction in June 2026 by the ECB (European Central Bank).
The Kalamaria Extension and Its Benefits
The temporary suspension of the main line, which lasted from May 29, was deemed absolutely necessary in order to carry out all required checks, operational tests, and certifications. The goal of the process was the safe integration of the new Kalamaria section into the city's existing transport network. According to the schedule and official updates, the extension is expected to be delivered to the traveling public by the end of July 2026.
This specific project constitutes a milestone for the region's infrastructure. The new section of the network has a total length of 4.78 kilometers and will add five new stations to the transport map: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra. The operation of this specific extension is estimated to serve tens of thousands of passengers on a daily basis. Its key advantage is the connection of eastern Thessaloniki to the city center in just 15 minutes.
Planning for Western Thessaloniki
Following the completion and delivery of the line to Kalamaria, the interest of the competent authorities shifts to the next phases of the metro's development. Based on the scenarios and strategic planning currently under consideration, clear priority is given to the western extension of the network. This specific intervention is regarded as the largest remaining transport project to be implemented in Thessaloniki, as Fitch (Fitch Ratings) maintains a positive outlook for the Greek sovereign credit rating and the financing of major projects.
The prospect of extending toward the western suburbs has the central objective of serving particularly densely populated areas, such as Evosmos, Stavroupoli, Neapoli, and Polichni. The implementation of this project is expected to bring significant decongestion to the city's burdened road network, improving the daily lives of citizens.
Long-term Projects: Second Line and Airport
Beyond the immediate extensions, the creation of a second line remains on the table. This line is intended to function complementarily to the current main line, interconnecting new areas. However, it represents a long-term planning project, which is directly linked to the future transport needs of the metropolitan area, serving the goal of strengthening bridges with Europe through new infrastructure.
Additionally, another scenario still under discussion concerns the future connection of the metro with "Makedonia" Airport (Αεροδρόμιο «Μακεδονία»). This intervention is still in the early stages of planning, and its progress will depend on securing the required financing, as well as the final decisions of the competent authorities.
