Redevelopment of Former Pavlos Melas Military Camp: Museum Inauguration and New Metropolitan Park
A significant milestone for the urban and cultural development of western Thessaloniki is approaching as the former Pavlos Melas (a historic military camp named after the Greek hero of the Macedonian Struggle) opens its gates to the public. After years of petitions from local authorities and the community, the site is being handed over to citizens, transformed into a modern Metropolitan Park and a major cultural center, providing long-awaited green space in the city's densely built urban environment.
Inauguration of the "Thessaloniki Metropolis" Museum
The first step in the repurposing of the historic camp site is the operation of the "Thessaloniki Metropolis" Museum. The museum is housed in the renovated Building A3, an impressive two-story structure with a total length of 150 meters and a surface area reaching 3,500 square meters. In its specially designed spaces, the museum will host the significant collection of antiquities and artifacts unearthed during excavation work for the construction of the Thessaloniki Metro.
The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 9. The event will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who will perform the opening ceremony, accompanied by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, and representatives of local authorities.
Delivery of the Metropolitan Park
The cultural upgrade of the area is accompanied by an equally critical urban redevelopment project, which has been a long-standing dream for the residents of western Thessaloniki. Next month, specifically on June 12, the grand opening of the first phase of the Metropolitan Park is expected.
Upon completion of this phase, a vast area totaling 340 stremmata (a Greek unit of land measurement equal to 1,000 square meters, totaling approximately 84 acres) will be delivered to the public. This space provides a vital green refuge within the dense concrete landscape, while offering new opportunities for walking, recreation, and a variety of activities for visitors and local residents.
New City Hall in the Pipeline
The planning for the full utilization of the former camp's infrastructure does not end with the museum and the park. According to the development schedule, the next building currently under renovation within the site is intended to house the new Pavlos Melas City Hall. The future delivery of the new City Hall is expected to centralize administrative services within the park, completing the site's transformation into a vibrant and multifunctional urban hub.
