Recursive Superintelligence Raises $650 Million for AI Development
AI startup Recursive Superintelligence has officially exited stealth mode, completing an impressive capital raise exceeding $650 million ($650M). The company, founded just a few months ago, secured this funding, achieving a valuation of $4.65 billion ($4.65B).
Strong Support from Leading Investors
The funding round was led by GV (Google's venture capital arm), which recently invested in the startup Anthropic, and the U.S.-based venture capital (VC) firm Greycroft. There was also significant participation from semiconductor giants, specifically Nvidia and AMD. The official funding announcement confirms previous reports that had predicted this capital injection.
Leadership and Human Capital
The company is headquartered in London, where it maintains offices, and also has a presence in San Francisco. Despite its high valuation, the team consists of fewer than 30 people.
Co-founders of Recursive Superintelligence include Richard Socher, who serves as CEO after previously holding the position of Chief Scientist at Salesforce, and Tim Rocktäschel, a professor of artificial intelligence at University College London (UCL) and a former scientist at Google DeepMind. The startup's remaining workforce includes executives with prior experience at industry leaders such as Meta and OpenAI, the latter of which recently restructured the OpenAI-Microsoft agreement to allow for greater cloud flexibility.
The Bet on "Self-Improving" Artificial Intelligence
Recursive Superintelligence's "bold bet" is based on the belief that AI systems will be able to improve themselves by analyzing their own performance without the need for human intervention.
In a post on the platform X, the company stated that the fastest path to "superintelligence" will be realized through recursively self-improving AI, using open-ended algorithms that lead to continuous innovation. The company plans to focus initially on the science of AI itself—creating AI that improves AI—with the ultimate goal of revolutionizing every scientific field. As emphasized in the statement, the potential benefits for humanity from the safe creation of such technology are immeasurable.
The Broader Landscape
Recursive Superintelligence is part of a broader industry trend, following the record-breaking funding of the startup Ineffable Intelligence. It is one of several new AI startups seeking novel ways to achieve performance leaps in AI systems. Other initiatives in this wave include Yann LeCun's AMI Labs and David Silver's Ineffable Intelligence.
