OTE Group in Negotiations to Acquire Nova’s Fixed-Line Network
The Greek telecommunications market appears to be entering a critical period of restructuring and significant adjustments. According to industry reports, Όμιλος ΟΤΕ (OTE Group - Hellenic Telecommunications Organization) is in negotiations with Nova to acquire the latter's fixed-line infrastructure network. This potential deal is reigniting discussions regarding the broader reconfiguration of the country's next-generation network map.
For its part, OTE Group, following an inquiry, declined to comment on the report. However, if confirmed, this move would represent a new "chapter" in the strategic adjustments necessitated by both intensifying competition and the need for financial consolidation among the involved parties.
Target: Financial Consolidation for Nova
For Nova, the potential sale of its network infrastructure is part of a broader asset monetization strategy. This strategy follows recent management changes at its parent company, United Group, specifically after the departure of Dragan Šolak.
United Group, which has previously engaged in divestments to manage its financial obligations, has been evaluating various options for its Greek subsidiary for some time. These options range from a full sale of the company to the partial disposal of its assets, primarily driven by the need to bolster the group's liquidity.
Strategic Fortification for OTE Group
Conversely, for OTE Group, the potential acquisition of Nova's fixed-line network is interpreted as a clear "consolidation of forces" strategic move. The competitive landscape is shifting rapidly, particularly as ΔΕΗ (Public Power Corporation - PPC) expands aggressively into Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) infrastructure. It is noteworthy that through its ΔΕΗ Fiber (PPC Fiber) network, the Public Power Corporation has already secured the second position in the domestic market in terms of network reach.
Through this potential acquisition, OTE seeks to fortify its leading market position. OTE Group already maintains the largest FTTH footprint in Greece, with more than 2 million connections. By consistently investing in its network expansion, the set target is to cover 3.8 million households and businesses by 2027, ensuring its competitive advantage remains intact. Finally, it is recalled that in late January, OTE Group completed another relevant acquisition aimed at strengthening its presence.
