Change of the 'Guard' in the Aegean: Blue Star Delos Replaces Blue Star Chios
With a new official decision signed on April 24, 2026, the Ministry (Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy) is proceeding with a major reorganization of the ferry fleet serving the Aegean routes. Specifically, the replacement of the vessel BLUE STAR CHIOS (Registry Number 10883) by the larger and state-of-the-art BLUE STAR DELOS (Registry Number 12082) was approved.
This move is not merely a bureaucratic change but a strategic choice directly impacting the daily lives of islanders and travelers. The Blue Star Delos, one of the "heavyweights" of Greek shipping, is now tasked with the work previously performed by the Blue Star Chios, offering increased capacity and different technical specifications that meet the needs of the period.
This modification was deemed necessary for the smooth operation of maritime transport, ensuring that the connection between the islands and the mainland remains uninterrupted and high-quality.
What does this mean for businesses?
The replacement of the vessels has a direct impact on the local economy and trade:
- Increase in transport capacity: The Blue Star Delos features larger spaces for trucks and cargo, facilitating the supply of local markets.
- Supply chain reliability: Using a vessel with proven resilience to weather conditions reduces the likelihood of delays in product deliveries.
- Tourism upgrade: For businesses in the tourism sector, the deployment of a high-specification vessel translates to a better experience for visitors, enhancing the reputation of the destination.
- Schedule stability: Business owners can plan their receipts and shipments with greater precision, knowing the new operational framework of the route.
The decision bears the ADA (Internet Uploading Number) E5N54653PO-OXF and is available on Diavgeia (Greece's transparency portal where all government decisions must be published to be valid).
