# Greece's 2027 road tax: what it costs, how to pay, and the 31 December deadline

The 2027 road-tax notices went up on ΑΑΔΕ's myCAR platform on 2 November 2026. Owners of Greek-plated cars have until 31 December 2026 to pay without a fine, or to declare the car off the road.

## Does this affect you?

- **Owners of Greek-plated cars, resident or not**: The 2027 road tax must be paid by 31 December 2026 to avoid a fine. The notice is already on ΑΑΔΕ's myCAR platform, and ERT reports that no change to the rates has been announced.[S1][S8]
- **Anyone with a car they will not use in 2027**: You owe nothing for 2027 only if you declare the car off the road (ακινησία) by 31 December 2026, then take its plates off and keep it at the declared parking spot.[S1]
- **Owners who live abroad**: The law makes the owner liable without tying the tax to residence, so on our reading the same deadline applies. The notice can be found without TAXISnet codes, using the owner's tax number and plate.[S1][S11]

**What to do:** Pay the 2027 road tax, or declare the car off the road, by 31 December 2026.[S1]

## Key dates

- 2026-12-31: Greece: 2027 road tax due; last day to declare a car off the road for 2027

## At a glance

- The 2027 road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας) on Greek-plated cars must be paid by 31 December 2026; ERT reports that no change to the rates has been announced.[S1][S8]
- Paying late costs 25% extra in January 2027, 50% in February and a fine equal to the full tax from 1 March 2027.[S1][S8]
- A car you will not use in 2027 must be declared off the road (ακινησία) by 31 December 2026, and its plates taken off.[S1]

Every car with Greek number plates owes road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας, teli kykloforias) for 2027 unless it is exempt or declared off the road, and the bill is due before the year begins.[S1] ΑΑΔΕ (Ανεξάρτητη Αρχή Δημοσίων Εσόδων, Anexartiti Archi Dimosion Esodon), Greece's tax authority, posted the 2027 notices on its myCAR platform on Monday 2 November 2026, according to several Greek outlets; LiFO reports that they went up at midday.[S8][S11] ERT, the public broadcaster, reports that no change to the rates has been announced for 2027.[S8]

The rules come from Law 5177/2025, the code of indirect taxes published in the Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ, FEK) on 14 February 2025.[S1] The tax is owed by the car's owner, and co-owners are each liable for the full amount.[S1][S2]

## When is the deadline for the 2027 road tax?

The deadline to pay Greece's 2027 road tax without a fine is 31 December 2026.[S1] The law says road tax is collected from 1 November to 31 December of the year before the one it covers.[S1] The same date, 31 December 2026, is the last day to declare a car off the road so that no 2027 tax is due.[S1]

A ministerial decision can extend both deadlines, but no extension had been announced for 2027 by 3 November 2026.[S1]

## How do I pay, with or without TAXISnet codes?

The notice (ειδοποιητήριο, eidopoiitirio) is on myCAR, which you enter with TAXISnet codes, the personal log-in for Greek tax services.[S5] You do not need the codes just to see and pay the notice: LiFO reports that you can retrieve it with the owner's tax number (ΑΦΜ, AFM), the plate number and the year.[S11] ΑΑΔΕ has an English page on this, titled "Road Tax without TAXISnet Access Codes".[S12]

ERT lists the ways to pay: e-banking or mobile banking using the RF payment code printed on the notice, the notice's QR code scanned in a banking app, ATMs, bank branches and ΕΛΤΑ (ELTA), the Greek post office.[S8]

## How much is the 2027 road tax?

The amount depends on when the car was first registered in Greece or elsewhere in the EU or European Economic Area.[S2]

- **First registered up to 31 October 2010:** a flat amount set by engine size in cubic centimetres (cc), in three sub-tables by year of first registration (up to 2000, 2001–2005, 2006 onwards).[S2]
- **First registered from 1 November 2010:** the tax is based only on CO2 emissions.[S2]
- **First registered from 1 January 2021:** a separate CO2 table, based on the newer WLTP test, applies.[S2]

For older cars first registered from 2006 to October 2010, the key amounts in the law as consolidated are these.[S2]

| Engine size | Annual road tax |
|---|---|
| 1,072–1,357 cc | €135 |
| 1,358–1,548 cc | €255 |
| 1,549–1,738 cc | €280 |
| 1,739–1,928 cc | €320 |
| 1,929–2,357 cc | €690 |

Cars first registered up to 2000 pay less in the bands above 1,357 cc, for example €225 instead of €255 for 1,358–1,548 cc.[S2]

For cars first registered from November 2010 to December 2020, each CO2 band carries a rate in euros per gram: €0 up to 90 g/km, €0.90 for 91–100 g/km, €0.98 for 101–120 g/km, €1.20 for 121–140 g/km, €1.85 for 141–160 g/km and, at the top, €3.72 from 251 g/km.[S2] For cars first registered from January 2021, the WLTP table charges €0 up to 122 g/km, €0.64 for 123–139 g/km, €0.70 for 140–166 g/km, €0.85 for 167–208 g/km and, at the top, €2.85 from 281 g/km.[S2] On our reading of the tables, a car first registered in 2015 that emits 130 g/km would pay 130 × €1.20 = €156 a year, by our calculation.[S2] Your notice shows the exact amount.[S11]

## Are electric cars, hybrids and disabled drivers exempt?

Electric and hydrogen cars first registered up to 31 October 2010 are exempt; later ones fall under the CO2 tables, where the lowest band pays €0.[S2] Hybrids first registered up to 31 October 2010 are exempt up to 1,548 cc, and above that they pay 60% of the tax on the equivalent conventional car.[S2]

Private cars wholly owned by people with disabilities, as defined in the laws the code lists, are exempt.[S1][S2] An ΑΑΔΕ circular of 6 May 2025 explains who qualifies under each of those laws (a disability rate of 67% or more is required only for certain listed conditions, such as cystic fibrosis), allows one car per person, and makes the exemption last for the years the disability certificate is valid.[S6] You apply in myCAR, and ΑΑΔΕ pulls the data automatically from ΚΕΠΑ (KEPA), the disability assessment centres of e-ΕΦΚΑ (e-EFKA), the social security fund, for certificates issued from 16 September 2022.[S7]

## How do I take a car off the road for 2027 (ακινησία)?

If you will not drive the car in 2027, you can declare it off the road (ακινησία, akinisia) online and owe no 2027 tax, provided you declare before 1 January 2027.[S1] Simply not using the car does not exempt you, iefimerida notes.[S14] The declaration is made in myCAR and needs TAXISnet codes.[S5] The digital route covers private cars and motorcycles whose plates and registration certificate are held by the owner.[S5]

You keep the plates, but you must take them off the car immediately after declaring.[S1] The car must stay at the private parking spot declared on the platform and may not be driven.[S1][S8] The declaration stays valid until you apply to lift it.[S1]

> Driving or moving a car declared off the road costs a €10,000 fine under Article 62(4) of Law 5177/2025.[S1]

That is the trap: if the car is found on the road, or parked anywhere other than the declared spot, the ακινησία lapses, the road tax plus the late fine falls due, and ΑΑΔΕ imposes a €10,000 administrative fine.[S1] A repeat with the same car within five years triples the fine, and the owner's or keeper's driving licence is removed for three years.[S1]

There is one narrow exception. Up to twice a year, an insured car declared off the road may be driven on a temporary permit for a total of up to three days a year, only to take it to a scrapping point, for repairs or the roadworthiness test (ΚΤΕΟ, KTEO), or to move it to a new storage place. The permit is issued online through gov.gr and costs €10 a day for a car or €3 for a motorcycle.[S1]

## Can I put the car back on the road from April (Article 62Α)?

Yes: since 2025, a car in ακινησία can return to the road for part of the year.[S3][S4] Article 62Α, added to the law in 2025, lets the owner of a private car or motorcycle lift ακινησία once a year from 1 April, paying twelfths of the annual tax for the months on the road within that year; a period of less than a month counts as a whole month.[S3][S4] Mitos, the national register of administrative procedures (Εθνικό Μητρώο Διοικητικών Διαδικασιών, Ethniko Mitroo Dioikitikon Diadikasion), cites Law 5193/2025, Article 228, as the basis.[S4] When the paid months end, ΑΑΔΕ puts the car back into ακινησία automatically.[S3] Lifting ακινησία requires valid insurance.[S5] According to Mitos, a second lifting in the same year means paying the full annual tax, minus what you have already paid.[S4]

For a €255 annual tax, three full months on the road would cost €255 ÷ 12 × 3 = €63.75, by our calculation.[S2][S3]

> **€10,000**: Fine for driving a car declared off the road; tripled on a repeat within five years.[S1]

## What happens if I pay the 2027 road tax late?

Paying in January 2027 adds a fine of 25% of the tax; paying in February 2027 adds 50%.[S1] After that, or if you never pay, the law imposes a separate fine equal to the tax itself, so the bill doubles from 1 March 2027.[S1][S8] In every case the fine for non-payment cannot be lower than €30.[S1]

For a €200 road tax, by our calculation:[S1]

- paid in January 2027: €200 + €50 = €250;
- paid in February 2027: €200 + €100 = €300;
- paid from 1 March 2027: €200 + €200 = €400.

Lorries, buses and some public-use vehicles such as taxis get halved fines; private cars do not.[S1] Police check road tax electronically, and if the tax is owed they remove the plates and registration certificate until you show proof of payment.[S1]

## Do non-residents with Greek-plated cars have to pay?

The law makes the owner liable, and it does not tie the tax to where the owner lives.[S1][S2] An ΑΑΔΕ English page for Greeks abroad and non-residents, which we saw only in a search snippet, says a vehicle owes road tax if it has Greek plates, whether or not the owner is a permanent resident.[S13] We could not open that page to check it.[S13] If you live abroad, you can find the notice without TAXISnet codes using your tax number and plate, but declaring ακινησία needs the codes.[S11][S5]

## What we checked

- **confirmed**: ERT reported fines of 25% in January, 50% in February and 100% from 1 March 2027.[S8] → Article 60(3) of Law 5177/2025 sets the 25% and 50% fines and, after that, a separate fine equal to the road tax. The law does not use the figure 100%, but the effect is the same.[S1]
- **confirmed**: ERT and Euro2day reported that the deadline is 31 December 2026.[S8][S9] → Article 60(1) of the law sets the payment window as 1 November to 31 December of the year before the tax year.[S1]
- **confirmed**: Naftemporiki reported a €10,000 fine for driving a car declared off the road, rising to €30,000 on a repeat.[S10] → Article 62(4) sets a €10,000 administrative fine, tripled on a repeat within five years, when the owner's or keeper's driving licence is also removed for three years.[S1]
- **confirmed**: LiFO reported that the tax is based on engine size for cars first registered up to 31 October 2010 and on CO2 emissions from 1 November 2010.[S11] → Article 55 of Law 5177/2025, as consolidated, sets a flat amount by engine size for cars first registered up to 31 October 2010 and taxes later cars on CO2 emissions alone, with a separate WLTP table from 1 January 2021.[S2]

## What we don't know yet

- We found no formal ΑΑΔΕ press release on the 2027 road tax. Several outlets report that the notices were posted, but ΑΑΔΕ's website blocked our reader.
- Whether the 31 December 2026 deadline will be extended. The law allows a ministerial decision to extend both the payment and the ακινησία deadlines, but none has been announced for 2027.
- Whether the road-tax rates, including those for hybrids, will be reformed for 2028. We found no change for 2027.
- What ΑΑΔΕ's English page for non-residents currently says: we saw it only in a search snippet.
- Whether an accountant or other representative can declare ακινησία for an owner abroad who has no TAXISnet codes.
- Some press reports mention a 1,650 cc cap on the disability exemption. We could not find it in the law or in the ΑΑΔΕ circular we read.
