# Greece's parental leave allowance: who gets it, how much, and how to apply online

Each working parent in Greece can take four months of parental leave per child before the child turns 8, and ΔΥΠΑ pays the first two at the minimum wage, €920 gross a month since 1 April 2026. A bill announced on 16 October 2026 would loosen some rules, but it is still in talks and is not law.

## Does this affect you?

- **Private-sector employees with a child under 8**: Each parent can take four months of parental leave per child, and ΔΥΠΑ pays the first two months at the minimum wage, €920 gross a month since 1 April 2026, plus a share of the Christmas and Easter bonuses and the annual-leave allowance. [S2][S5]
- **Public-sector staff on private-law contracts (ΙΔΑΧ or ΙΔΟΧ)**: They are covered on the same terms, unless they fall under the separate civil-service leave rules of laws 3528/2007 or 3584/2007. [S1]
- **Parents of twins or more, and single parents**: Parents of twins, triplets or more get two extra months of allowance, paid once; a single parent gets double the leave and double the allowance. [S2][S1]
- **Parents planning leave for another child within a year**: The law still requires one year of work with the same employer after the previous child's leave ends, unless more favourable terms apply. A bill announced on 16 October 2026 would remove that wait, but it is not law. [S2][S9][S10]

**What to do:** Nothing changes yet under the announced bill, which has not been tabled. [S9] To claim now, ask your employer in writing or electronically at least one month before the leave starts [S2], make sure the employer posts form Ε.14 in ΕΡΓΑΝΗ, and then apply to ΔΥΠΑ online; there is no application deadline. ## At a glance

- Each working parent has four months of parental leave per child, to be started before the child turns 8, and ΔΥΠΑ pays the first two months at the statutory minimum wage, €920 gross a month since 1 April 2026. [S1][S2][S5]
- Parents of twins or more get two extra paid months, and single parents get double leave and a double allowance; the allowance is tax-free and cannot be seized. [S2]
- Applications go online to ΔΥΠΑ at any time after the employer posts form Ε.14 in ΕΡΓΑΝΗ; there is no deadline, and applications have been online-only since 5 January 2022. [S1][S3]

Greece pays working parents a parental leave allowance (επίδομα γονικής άδειας, epidoma gonikis adeias) for the first two of the four months of parental leave that each parent can take for a child under 8.[S1][S2] The allowance is paid by ΔΥΠΑ (Δημόσια Υπηρεσία Απασχόλησης, Dimosia Ypiresia Apascholisis), the public employment service, and equals the statutory minimum wage.[S2] The statutory minimum wage has been €920 gross a month since 1 April 2026.[S5][S6] Applications to ΔΥΠΑ for the parental leave allowance have been online-only since 5 January 2022, when ΔΥΠΑ, then called ΟΑΕΔ (Οργανισμός Απασχόλησης Εργατικού Δυναμικού, Organismos Apascholisis Ergatikou Dynamikou), opened the e-application.[S3][S11]

On 16 October 2026 Labour Minister Niki Kerameus (Νίκη Κεραμέως) announced a bill that would change some of these rules, but according to press reports it is still being discussed with the social partners, and we found no sign that it has been tabled.[S10][S9] This guide sets out the rules in force on 22 October 2026, then what the bill would change.[S2][S1]

## How long is parental leave in Greece?

Every working parent in Greece has an individual right to four months of parental leave per child, which cannot be transferred to the other parent.[S2] The four months can be taken in one block or in parts, until the child turns 8.[S2] For a child up to 8 who is adopted or fostered, the leave runs from the date the child joins the family.[S2]

At the parent's request, parental leave can also be granted flexibly, for example as shorter daily hours or as days off spread over the week or the month, without losing the allowance; an employer that refuses must give its reasons in writing within one month.[S2][S1] Article 231 of the Labour Code provides the ΔΥΠΑ allowance for the first two months of the leave only.[S2]

## Who qualifies for the parental leave allowance?

The parental leave allowance is for working parents of children up to 8: natural, adoptive and foster parents, presumed mothers under article 1464 of the Civil Code, and anyone else who exercises parental responsibility.[S1][S2] ΔΥΠΑ lists three groups of workers who can claim it:[S1]

- **Private-sector employees**, including part-time, fixed-term and temporary-agency staff, and people on salaried-mandate contracts.[S1]
- **Public-sector staff on private-law contracts**, open-ended (ΙΔΑΧ) or fixed-term (ΙΔΟΧ), or on salaried mandates, in the public sector, public-law bodies, local government and the wider public sector, if they do not fall under the separate leave rules of laws 3528/2007 and 3584/2007.[S1]
- **Staff hired through the Hellenic Air Force** at the US naval facility at Souda.[S1]

The parental leave allowance has two conditions.[S1] First, the employer must post form Ε.14, which records that the leave has been granted, in ΕΡΓΑΝΗ (ERGANI), the labour ministry's online employment register.[S1][S2] Second, the leave must start before the child's 8th birthday.[S1]

## Do you need a year with your employer?

The Labour Code says a parent must have completed one year with the same employer, continuously or through successive fixed-term contracts, unless a more favourable rule or agreement applies.[S2] In practice, ΔΥΠΑ pays the parental leave allowance even with less than a year's service if the employer has posted form Ε.14, because the posting shows a more favourable agreement between employer and employee.[S1]

For a second or later child, the law grants a separate leave and allowance for each child, provided one year of actual work with the same employer has passed since the leave for the previous child ended.[S2] ΔΥΠΑ still pays inside that year if form Ε.14 records that the leave is granted under a more favourable arrangement.[S1]

## How much is the parental leave allowance?

> **€920**: The monthly parental leave allowance, gross, since 1 April 2026: the statutory minimum wage.[S2][S5]

The parental leave allowance equals the statutory minimum wage in force at the time, plus a proportional share of the Christmas and Easter bonuses (δώρα εορτών) and the annual-leave allowance (επίδομα άδειας).[S2] The minimum monthly wage for salaried employees is €920 from 1 April 2026, under joint ministerial decision 8934/2026 (Government Gazette Β' 1759, 27 March 2026).[S5][S6] Two months of allowance therefore come to €1,840 gross, before the share of bonuses, by our calculation.[S2][S5] The amount is the same for full-time, part-time and rotating work.[S1]

ΔΥΠΑ pays the parental leave allowance pro rata to the days or hours of leave actually taken, as recorded on form Ε.14.[S1] The months on the allowance count as insurance time for the main pension, health cover and the auxiliary pension.[S2][S1] ΔΥΠΑ deducts the employee's insurance contribution from the allowance and pays it to the fund, together with the employer's contribution, which ΔΥΠΑ itself covers.[S2][S1] By our reading, that means less than €920 a month reaches the parent's account, but ΔΥΠΑ does not publish a net figure.[S1]

## What extra do twins and single parents get?

Parents of twins, triplets or more can take the leave for each child separately, and get two extra months of allowance, however many children are born together.[S2] ΔΥΠΑ says the extra months are paid once.[S1] In ΔΥΠΑ's worked example, a parent of twins who takes four months' leave for each child, eight months in all, is paid for six months: two for each child plus the two extra months.[S1]

Single parents get double the leave and double the allowance: that covers a parent whose child's other parent has died, has fully lost parental responsibility, or has not recognised the child.[S2] ΔΥΠΑ adds that the parent must exercise parental responsibility alone.[S1] In ΔΥΠΑ's worked example, a single parent takes eight months' leave and receives four months of allowance.[S1]

## Is the allowance taxed or open to seizure?

The parental leave allowance is tax-free, cannot be assigned to anyone else and cannot be seized, whether the money is held by the state or by a third party such as a bank.[S2] It cannot be frozen or offset against assessed debts to the tax office, the state and other public bodies, social insurance funds or banks, and it does not count as family income.[S2][S1] The tax-free rule was added as paragraph 13 of article 231 by law 5239/2025, known as «Δίκαιη Εργασία για Όλους» ("Fair Work for All").[S7] ΑΑΔΕ (Ανεξάρτητη Αρχή Δημοσίων Εσόδων, Anexartiti Archi Dimosion Esodon), the tax authority, notified the change in circular Ο.3065/2025 of 27 October 2025.[S7]

## How do you ask your employer for the leave?

A parent asks the employer for parental leave in writing or electronically, at least one month before the leave is due to start.[S2] The employer must reply within one month and may postpone the leave only for serious disruption to the business, with the reasons in writing.[S2] In every case the employer must grant the parental leave within two months of the request.[S2] Some parents get absolute priority, including parents with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, single parents, large families and women returning from maternity leave.[S2]

## How do you apply to ΔΥΠΑ?

> Applications for the parental leave allowance can be made at any time after the leave is granted and form Ε.14 is posted: ΔΥΠΑ sets no deadline.[S1]

1. **Get the leave registered.** The employer posts form Ε.14 in ΕΡΓΑΝΗ.[S1] The form carries the details of employer and employee, the hiring date, the type of contract, working hours, the child's ΑΜΚΑ (AMKA, the social security number), the leave period and how the leave is taken.[S1]
2. **Register in the National Communication Registry.** Before applying, register in the Εθνικό Μητρώο Επικοινωνίας (Ε.Μ.Επ., Ethniko Mitroo Epikoinonias) to confirm your email address and mobile number.[S4]
3. **Apply online.** Submit the application through ΔΥΠΑ's e-service at parentalbenefits.dypa.gov.gr, logging in with your TAXISnet codes, the personal passwords for ΑΑΔΕ's online services.[S1][S4]
4. **Answer any requests.** Form Ε.14 is the main document, but ΔΥΠΑ may ask for any other document it needs.[S1]

## When is the parental leave allowance paid?

ΔΥΠΑ pays the parental leave allowance in arrears for each calendar month, after it issues a decision that calculates the amount for the days or hours of leave taken.[S1] ΔΥΠΑ does not give a fixed processing time on its service page.[S1]

## What happens if the leave is interrupted?

The parental leave allowance stops if the parent asks for it to stop, or if the leave is interrupted, for example because the job ends or because of sick leave or similar compulsory leave.[S1] The allowance can resume with a renewed contract or a new employer if a new form Ε.14 is posted.[S1] Any unused leave and allowance carries over to a later period, as long as the child is still under 8.[S1][S2]

## What is changing under the announced bill?

Labour Minister Niki Kerameus said on 16 October 2026, in an interview with ERT, the public broadcaster, that the one-year wait between parental leaves for different children would be abolished: «Αυτός ο ένας χρόνος θα καταργηθεί» ("That one year will be abolished", in our translation).[S10] Taxheaven and Proto Thema (Πρώτο Θέμα) reported two further changes in the same bill.[S8][S9]

- **No need to declare who goes first.** When both parents work for the same employer, they would no longer have to declare which of them takes leave first, according to Taxheaven and Capital.gr.[S8][S10] Πρώτο Θέμα describes the change only as more flexibility in how the leave is taken.[S9]
- **Carer's leave without six months' service.** The requirement to have worked six months for the same employer before taking carer's leave would be dropped.[S8][S9]

Ms Kerameus said the bill stems from an EU directive and is the subject of extensive discussion with the national social partners, and Πρώτο Θέμα reported the same.[S10][S9] We found no bill text or ministry press release, and no sign that the bill has been tabled in Parliament, so the current rules, including the one-year wait, still apply.[S9][S2]

## What is the legal basis?

The parental leave allowance was created by article 28 of law 4808/2021 (Government Gazette Α' 101, 19 June 2021); article 25 set who is covered, and ΔΥΠΑ cites both as the legal basis.[S1][S12] Those rules are now article 231 of the Labour Code, presidential decree 62/2025 (Government Gazette Α' 121, 11 July 2025), as amended.[S1][S13] A joint ministerial decision may set out the procedure, but the law says that issuing one is not a condition for applying the article.[S2]

For other payments to families, see our guide to [the birth allowance](https://agentnews.gr/guides/greece-birth-allowance-2026-rise).

## What we checked

- **confirmed**: ΔΥΠΑ's page says the allowance equals the statutory minimum wage in force at the time, whatever the job pattern. [S1] → Article 231 ties the allowance to the minimum wage 'as set from time to time', and the joint ministerial decision published on 27 March 2026 sets that wage at €920 a month from 1 April 2026. [S2][S5]
- **confirmed**: The allowance is tax-free and cannot be seized. [S2] → The rule is paragraph 13 of article 231, added by article 11 of law 5239/2025 and notified by ΑΑΔΕ in circular Ο.3065/2025 of 27 October 2025. [S7]
- **missing**: Greek outlets report that the bill announced on 16 October 2026 abolishes the one-year wait between parental leaves for different children. [S8][S9][S10] → We found no bill text or ministry press release; the reports rest on the minister's statements, and the bill is still in talks with the social partners. [S9][S10]

## What we don't know yet

- When the Labour Ministry's bill will go to public consultation and be tabled in Parliament.
- Whether removing the one-year wait will cover the ΔΥΠΑ allowance as well as the leave: article 231 ties both to the one-year gap.
- Whether the bill will change anything else about the allowance, such as the amount, the two-month limit or who is covered; nothing has been announced.
- How long ΔΥΠΑ takes from application to decision and payment; there is no official figure.
- The net amount after the employee's insurance contribution, which ΔΥΠΑ does not publish.
- Whether the allowance will stay at €920 until the next minimum-wage decision; any rise for 2027 has not been decided.
- Whether a joint ministerial decision on the procedure under article 231, paragraph 12, has been issued; we found none, and the law says it is not needed.

## Greek passages quoted

- [S2] Article 231, paragraph 1: «Κάθε εργαζόμενος γονέας ή πρόσωπο που ασκεί τη γονική μέριμνα έχει ατομικό και αμεταβίβαστο δικαίωμα γονικής άδειας για την ανατροφή του παιδιού, διάρκειας τεσσάρων (4) μηνών, την οποία μπορεί να χρησιμοποιήσει συνεχόμενα ή τμηματικά, μέχρι το παιδί να συμπληρώσει την ηλικία των οκτώ (8) ετών» In our translation: Every working parent or person exercising parental responsibility has an individual and non-transferable right to parental leave to raise the child, lasting four (4) months, which they may use continuously or in parts until the child reaches the age of eight (8).
- [S2] Article 231, paragraph 3: «Για τους δύο (2) πρώτους μήνες της γονικής άδειας, η Δ.ΥΠ.Α. υποχρεούται να καταβάλλει επίδομα γονικής άδειας στον κάθε γονέα, μηνιαίως, ποσού ίσου με τον ελάχιστο νομοθετημένο μισθό, όπως κάθε φορά καθορίζεται, καθώς και αναλογία δώρων εορτών και επιδόματος άδειας» In our translation: For the first two (2) months of parental leave, ΔΥΠΑ is obliged to pay a parental leave allowance to each parent, monthly, of an amount equal to the statutory minimum wage as set from time to time, together with a proportional share of the holiday bonuses and the leave allowance.
- [S2] Article 231, paragraph 13, added by Law 5239/2025 (Taxheaven's consolidated text; not in the original ΦΕΚ Α' 121/2025): «Το επίδομα γονικής άδειας είναι αφορολόγητο, ανεκχώρητο και ακατάσχετο στα χέρια του Δημοσίου ή τρίτων … και δεν προσμετράται στο συνολικό, πραγματικό ή τεκμαρτό οικογενειακό εισόδημα.» In our translation: The parental leave allowance is tax-free, cannot be assigned and cannot be seized in the hands of the State or third parties … and is not counted towards total, actual or deemed family income.
