## Does this affect you?

- **People who drive into central Athens on weekdays**: Until 23 July 2027, a private car or private van up to 2,200 kg may enter the ring only on dates that match the last digit of its plate, Monday to Thursday 07:00–20:00 and Friday 07:00–15:00. [S1]
- **Residents inside the ring**: Residents are exempt only with an entry-exit card from the City of Athens, and may then drive only within their own zone by the shortest route home. CNN Greece reported that the online application was not working at midday on 12 October 2026. [S1][S4]
- **Visitors with foreign-plated or rental cars**: Foreign-plated cars of foreign visitors and Greeks living abroad are exempt for their first 40 days in Greece. Cars they rent are exempt for the same period if a copy of the rental contract is in the car. [S1]
- **Owners of electric, hybrid, gas or low-CO₂ Euro 6 cars**: These cars are exempt, but the exemption works through a special badge issued online through gov.gr. [S1]

**What to do:** Before driving into the ring on a weekday, check the date against the last digit of your plate. If your car is exempt, get the gov.gr badge, City of Athens card or Traffic Police permit first. The rules run until 23 July 2027. [S1]

## At a glance

- Athens' central traffic ring (daktylios) applies from 12 October 2026 to 23 July 2027, Monday to Thursday 07:00–20:00 and Friday 07:00–15:00. [S1]
- On odd dates, plates ending 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 may enter; on even dates, plates ending 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Electric, hybrid, gas and low-CO₂ Euro 6 cars are exempt with a gov.gr badge. [S1]
- Foreign-plated cars of visitors are exempt for their first 40 days in Greece. By our reading of the 2025 Road Traffic Code, the fine is €150, not the €100 some outlets reported. [S1][S2][S3][S9][S10]

Central Athens has a traffic ring again. From Monday 12 October 2026 to Friday 23 July 2027, most private cars may enter the centre on weekdays only on alternate dates, depending on the last digit of the number plate.[S1] The rules are set by joint ministerial decision (κοινή υπουργική απόφαση, ΚΥΑ) Δ.Ο.Υ./161393, which appears in the Government Gazette (Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως, Efimerida tis Kyverniseos; issues are cited as ΦΕΚ, FEK) in issue Β' 6130.[S1] The Gazette issue is dated 9 October 2026.[S1] Greeks call the ring the «δακτύλιος» (daktylios).[S1]

## Who made the rules?

The decision was signed on 9 October 2026 by the ministers of four ministries.[S1] These are Citizen Protection (Υπουργείο Προστασίας του Πολίτη, Ypourgeio Prostasias tou Politi); Infrastructure and Transport (Υπουργείο Υποδομών και Μεταφορών, Ypourgeio Ypodomon kai Metaforon); Environment and Energy (Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, Ypourgeio Perivallontos kai Energeias); and Digital Governance (Υπουργείο Ψηφιακής Διακυβέρνησης, Ypourgeio Psifiakis Diakyvernisis).[S1] The signatories are Michalis Chrysochoidis (Citizen Protection), Christos Dimas (Infrastructure and Transport), Georgios Kotsiras (Alternate Minister of Infrastructure and Transport), Stavros Papastavrou (Environment and Energy) and Dimitrios Papastergiou (Digital Governance).[S1] Under the 2026 decision, any earlier decision that set the rules for traffic in the centre of Athens differently ceases to apply.[S1]

## When does the Athens traffic ring apply?

The 2026-27 ring applies from 12 October 2026 up to and including 23 July 2027.[S1] It runs Monday to Thursday from 07:00 to 20:00, and Friday from 07:00 to 15:00.[S1] Saturdays and Sundays are not covered, because the decision sets hours only for Monday to Friday.[S1]

The ring does not apply on official public holidays.[S1] It also does not apply on days when workers in all public transport are on strike.[S1] By our reading, a strike on only one network, such as the metro, does not lift the ring, because the decision says «σε όλα τα Μέσα Μαζικής Μεταφοράς» ("in all public transport", in our translation).[S1] The Minister of Citizen Protection may also lift the measures by decision "if special reasons exist", in our translation.[S1]

## Which vehicles does the ring restrict?

The ring restricts two kinds of vehicle: private-use passenger cars, and private-use goods vehicles (vans) with a maximum laden mass of up to 2,200 kg.[S1] The Greek text literally says «2.200 χιλιάδων χιλιογράμμων», which translates as "2,200 thousand kilograms".[S1] That wording is in the official Government Gazette text itself, and we read it as 2,200 kg (2.2 tonnes).[S1]

## Can I drive in today? The odd-even rule

On even dates, cars and vans whose plate ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 may enter the ring.[S1] On odd dates, those whose plate ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 may enter.[S1] What counts is the last digit of the registration number and the calendar date, not the day of the week.[S1]

For example, Thursday 15 October 2026 is an odd date, so only plates ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 may enter the ring between 07:00 and 20:00 (by our calculation).[S1] On Friday 16 October 2026, an even date, plates ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 may enter between 07:00 and 15:00 (by our calculation).[S1] Months ending on the 31st produce two odd dates in a row: Wednesday 31 March 2027 and Thursday 1 April 2027 are both odd-plate days (by our calculation).[S1]

> On odd dates, plates ending 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 may enter central Athens; on even dates, plates ending 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

## Where exactly is the ring?

The ring is the area enclosed by the following roads, in the order the decision lists them.[S1] The boundary roads themselves are not restricted, so you may drive along them on any date.[S1]

1. Leoforos Alexandras (Λ. Αλεξάνδρας)
2. Zacharof (Ζαχάρωφ)
3. Leoforos Mesogeion (Λ. Μεσογείων)
4. Feidippidou (Φειδιππίδου)
5. Michalakopoulou (Μιχαλακοπούλου)
6. Spyrou Merkouri (Σπύρου Μερκούρη)
7. Vryaxidos (Βρυάξιδος)
8. Ymittou (Υμηττού)
9. Il. Iliou (Ηλ. Ηλιού)
10. Andr. Frantzi (Ανδρ. Φραντζή)
11. Leoforos Andr. Syngrou (Λ. Ανδρ. Συγγρού)
12. Chamosternas (Χαμοστέρνας)
13. Peiraios (Πειραιώς)
14. Iera Odos (Ιερά Οδός)
15. Leoforos Konstantinoupoleos (Λ. Κωνσταντινουπόλεως)
16. Achilleos (Αχιλλέως)
17. Plateia Karaiskaki (Πλατεία Καραϊσκάκη)
18. Karolou (Καρόλου)
19. Marni (Μάρνη)
20. 28is Oktovriou, also called Patision (28ης Οκτωβρίου (Πατησίων)), and back to Leoforos Alexandras

Separate, older restrictions in the Commercial Triangle (Εμπορικό Τρίγωνο, Emporiko Trigono), the area bounded by Athinas, Omonia Square, Stadiou, Syntagma Square and Mitropoleos, still apply.[S1]

## Which cars are exempt?

The first exemption in the decision covers clean cars.[S1] Factory-built fully electric cars, hybrid electric cars, and natural-gas or LPG cars are exempt.[S1] The decision says «εκ κατασκευής» ("as built", in our translation), so by our reading a car converted to gas after it was built is not covered.[S1]

Euro 6 cars with other engines are exempt if their CO₂ emissions are low enough.[S1] A Euro 6 car first registered in an EU member state up to and including 31 December 2020 must emit less than 120 g/km of CO₂ on the NEDC combined cycle.[S1] A Euro 6 car first registered in an EU member state from 1 January 2021 must emit less than 145 g/km on the WLTP combined cycle.[S1] The limits depend on the test cycle and the registration date, not on the fuel.[S1]

> **145g/km**: CO₂ limit (WLTP) for Euro 6 cars first registered in the EU from 1 January 2021 to be exempt from the Athens ring. [S1]

Other exemptions in Article 3 of the decision include:[S1]

- state, local-government and utility vehicles with special plates or visible markings;[S1]
- embassy cars with diplomatic plates;[S1]
- doctors' cars (the driver's status as a doctor proved by a medical ID card) carrying their medical association's badge, with the doctor as the only occupant, for emergency calls;[S1]
- war invalids' cars with special state plates, when driven by or carrying the war invalid;[S1]
- passenger cars, adapted or not, driven by or carrying a disabled person who holds a disability parking card (Δελτίο Στάθμευσης Ατόμων με Αναπηρίες, ΑμεΑ; Deltio Stathmefsis Atomon me Anapiries, AmeA);[S1]
- cars carrying patients who need frequent treatment, such as kidney or cancer patients, if the patient has a certificate from the hospital stating the length and frequency of treatment;[S1]
- vehicles carrying medicines and certain medical supplies, with the company's markings permanently visible, while carrying those supplies; the use must be shown on the registration certificate;[S1]
- private vans up to 2,200 kg carrying food, drink, hospital supplies or newspapers, and other private delivery vans from 21:00 to 09:00;[S1]
- hearses with special equipment;[S1]
- set numbers of cars for newspapers, broadcasters, airlines, banks, parliamentary parties and other bodies, which need a Traffic Police permit (see below).[S1]

## I have foreign plates or a rental car. Can I drive in?

Foreign-plated cars belonging to foreign visitors or to Greeks living abroad are exempt for the first 40 days of their stay in Greece.[S1] After that, by our reading, they follow the odd-even rule like Greek cars, by the last numerical digit of their plate.[S1]

Rental cars are exempt for the same 40-day period if they were rented by foreign visitors or by Greeks permanently resident abroad.[S1] The condition is that a copy of the rental contract is in the car.[S1] The same clause says such cars may be moved by the rental company to the place of delivery or collection, such as airports, ports and hotels.[S1] By our reading, a car rented by someone who lives in Greece is not covered by this clause.[S1]

The decision does not say how a driver proves when the 40 days began.[S1]

## Does the ring apply to motorbikes and taxis?

The decision restricts only private-use passenger cars and private-use vans up to 2,200 kg.[S1] It does not list motorcycles or taxis, so by our reading they are not restricted.[S1] We found no official statement that says this in so many words.[S1]

## How do I get the gov.gr badge for a clean car?

Owners of exempt clean cars (electric, hybrid, gas and qualifying Euro 6) need a special badge («ειδικό σήμα», eidiko sima).[S1] It is issued online through the state's single digital portal, gov.gr, or the digital documents repository.[S1] You log in with your Taxisnet tax-system credentials and enter the plate number and the tax number (ΑΦΜ, AFM) of the owner and/or keeper.[S1] The system checks eligibility automatically against the vehicle register kept by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.[S1] The online application counts as a formal solemn declaration (υπεύθυνη δήλωση, ypefthyni dilosi).[S1]

The badge carries a unique verification number and an electronic seal of the Ministry of Digital Governance.[S1] You can print it or keep it on your phone, and show it to police at a check.[S1] The decision says the badge is issued once and can be downloaded again through gov.gr if lost.[S1] The decision does not say whether a badge issued in an earlier season is still valid.[S1]

## How do residents of central Athens get an entry card?

Permanent residents of the area inside the ring are exempt if they hold a special entry-exit card issued by the City of Athens (Δήμος Αθηναίων, Dimos Athinaion).[S1] The ring is divided into four zones, Α, Β, Γ and Δ (the Greek equivalents of A, B, C and D), each defined street by street in the decision.[S1] The card is coloured by zone and shows the holder's name, home address and plate number.[S1] Cardholders may drive only within their own zone, by the shortest route to and from home.[S1] Residents who drive in another zone, or at times not allowed for their zone, face the same penalties as other offenders.[S1]

According to CNN Greece, residents apply at eservices.cityofathens.gr by choosing «Νέα Αίτηση» (New application), then «Διεύθυνση Δημοτικής Αστυνομίας» (Municipal Police Directorate), then «Αίτηση Χορήγησης Κάρτας Εισόδου-Εξόδου Δακτυλίου» (application for a ring entry-exit card).[S4] CNN Greece listed four documents: the car's registration certificate; a solemn declaration by the owner if the driver is not the owner (for example a loan or leasing); the driver's national identity card (αστυνομική ταυτότητα, astynomiki taftotita); and a copy of the driver's latest Ε1 tax return as proof of main residence.[S4]

On Monday 12 October 2026, the first day of the ring, the service was not working.[S4] CNN Greece reported that until midday applicants saw an «error» message.[S4] It also reported that the city's citizen service had not been informed and was directing callers to the Municipal Police (Δημοτική Αστυνομία, Dimotiki Astynomia) on 214 411 400.[S4] CNN's article dated this "Tuesday 12/10", but 12 October 2026 is a Monday.[S4]

## Who needs a Traffic Police permit, and how?

Under Article 5, paragraph 1, of the decision, the vehicles listed in points ιβ to λα and λστ of Article 3 may enter only with a special permit from the Attica Traffic Police Directorate (Διεύθυνση Τροχαίας Αττικής, Diefthynsi Trochaias Attikis).[S1] These include quota cars for newspapers, broadcasters, airlines, banks and political parties (each with a set number of cars), plus driving-school cars, cash-in-transit vehicles and serving judges' cars, which have no set number.[S1] Permits issued for 2026-27 are valid up to and including 23 July 2027.[S1] Permits issued for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 remain valid for 2026-27.[S1][S8] The Traffic Police may also issue temporary permits for emergencies, lasting no more than five days.[S1]

Applications are accepted Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00 at the Traffic Police headquarters, Th. Diligianni 24-26 (Θ. Δηλιγιάννη 24-26), 5th floor, according to in.gr, protothema.gr and lifo.gr.[S5][S6][S7] The contact details given are tel. 210 528 4011 and daktylios@astynomia.gr.[S5][S6] Applicants bring photocopies of the registration certificate, driving licence, a valid roadworthiness (ΚΤΕΟ, KTEO) certificate and a valid insurance policy.[S5][S7]

## What is the fine for driving in on the wrong day?

The decision says offenders are penalised under article 55, paragraph 6, of law 5209/2025, the Road Traffic Code (Κώδικας Οδικής Κυκλοφορίας, ΚΟΚ, Kodikas Odikis Kykloforias).[S1] That paragraph puts breaches of traffic-restriction measures in offence category Ε2-Α.[S2] Article 108, paragraph 5, of the same law sets the fine for category Ε2-Α at €150.[S3] By our reading of the code, the fine for entering the ring on the wrong date is therefore €150.[S1][S2][S3]

Some Greek outlets reported a €100 fine before the season started, citing the 2024 decision.[S9][S10] That figure predates the 2025 Road Traffic Code, which the 2026 decision now cites.[S1][S9][S10]

Drivers who ignore police instructions to park at a specific spot or to leave the restricted area immediately face up to one year in prison, under the same article.[S2]

## Check your car

- **Is it a private car or a private van up to 2,200 kg?** If not, the odd-even rule does not apply to it.[S1]
- **What is the last digit of the plate?** Match it to the date: odd digits on odd dates, even digits on even dates.[S1]
- **Is it electric, hybrid, or factory-built for gas or LPG?** It is exempt, with the gov.gr badge.[S1]
- **Is it Euro 6?** Check the CO₂ figure and first EU registration date on your registration certificate: under 120 g/km (NEDC) up to 31 December 2020, or under 145 g/km (WLTP) from 1 January 2021.[S1]
- **Foreign plates or a rental as a visitor?** You are exempt for your first 40 days in Greece; keep the rental contract in the car.[S1]
- **Live inside the ring?** Apply to the City of Athens for a zone card.[S1]
- **Is it a weekend, a public holiday or a day when all public transport is on strike?** The ring does not apply.[S1]

## Key dates

- **9 October 2026:** the decision is signed; Government Gazette issue ΦΕΚ Β' 6130 bears this date.[S1]
- **12 October 2026:** the ring starts.[S1]
- **23 July 2027:** the last day of the ring and the expiry date of this season's Traffic Police permits.[S1]

## What we checked

- **corrected**: in.gr (27 August 2026) and vradini.gr (23 September 2026) reported a €100 fine for entering the ring on the wrong day, citing the 2024 decision. [S9][S10] → The 2026 decision says offenders are punished under article 55 §6 of law 5209/2025, which puts the offence in category Ε2-Α; article 108 §5 sets the Ε2-Α fine at €150, by our reading. [S1][S2][S3]
- **corrected**: CNN Greece reported that the residents' card service was still down at midday on "Tuesday 12/10". [S4] → 12 October 2026, the first day of the ring under the decision, was a Monday (by our calculation). [S1]
- **confirmed**: To Vima and protothema.gr reported that special permits issued for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 remain valid. [S8][S6] → Article 6 §2 of the decision says exactly this. It does not say whether clean-car badges from earlier seasons carry over. [S1]
- **confirmed**: protothema.gr and lifo.gr reported that offenders are punished under article 55 §6 of the Road Traffic Code, without giving an amount. [S6][S7] → Article 6 §4 of the decision refers to article 55 §6 of law 5209/2025, and residents who drive outside their zone face the same penalties. [S1]

## What we don't know yet

- When the City of Athens online application for residents' cards will work, and whether 2025-26 residents' cards are honoured meanwhile. The decision keeps earlier Traffic Police permits valid but does not mention the city's cards.
- Whether a clean-car badge issued in an earlier season is still valid or must be issued again. The decision says the badge is issued once, but no official source says in those words that earlier badges remain valid for 2026-27.
- How a driver proves the 40-day period for a foreign-plated car at a police check, for example with an entry stamp or a ferry ticket. The decision does not say.
- Whether the ring is enforced by police patrols only or also by cameras.
- Whether cars converted to LPG or natural gas after purchase are exempt. The decision exempts only factory-built («εκ κατασκευής») gas cars, and we found no official clarification.
